Dear all,

at the beginning of July I'm going to visit the Netherlands for one week, being based in Amsterdam. Therefore I'm asking for your help and support in finding nice places which are situated around main lines for example and might be catched by public transportation. Of course, details like working frequency of the trains or the right angle are very important, please mind those details before your suggestions

Interesting things I'd like to attend are: E6 in Utrecht, private hauled trains, Fyra emu's from Ansaldobreda, Betuweroute and so on, and so on, and so on

Thx a lot for your efforts and Greetings from Vienna

Raimund

I think that E6 are the trams from Vienna that ride in Utrecht at the moment.

The Fyra's from Ansaldobreda do not drive often during the day, but most in the night. Here is no fixed timetable for unfortunately. They are still under construction, delivery and testing.

Well most time they (They = V250 4805 or 4804) do tour during the day, and depart about 08.40 from Amsterdam Central. The problem is, that there isn't a regular pattern, so they don't do it 7 days/week. (With my apologies for my bad English)

I hope your arrival will be before 7-7-2012, as the holiday period will be used to renew a large part of the 30 year old tramway infrastructure with severe restrictions to the service(not beyond the city boundary). The rush hour services with E6 trams, already curtailed to 2 3-car sets for financial reasons, will not run during the school holiday period.

Betuweroute: this spot https://maps.google.nl/?ll=51.835804,4.847331&spn=0.014718,0.027595&t=m&z=15 is a very good spot which is accessible when travelling by train.

For a spot on the "brabant route"you could go to Dordrecht-Zuid,when you step out on the station there it is only a small walk to get to a railroadcrossing in the neighborhood.
Maybe that is something to do,it's easy to find and get near with public transport(train).
Look in my photo album(link on the bottom of this message)for some photos of the place, there is still a bit of cargo running through and all sorts of passengertrains.
If you have questions, let me know

Dear all,

my stay will take place from 1st July until 9th. I've heard that our E6 are used to operate during the peak times only? Can anyone confirm this and inform about their timetable?

Are there also some other nice places on the Betuweroute which might be accessed by public transport? Anyhow, which other lines / places would you recommend for me? How does the situation look like on the main line to Belgium for example, etc.

Thx for your help,

Sybic

The E6 trams operate on line 260 from Utrecht to Nieuwegein-Zuid. Timetables are available on http://www.connexxion.nl/dienstregeling/lijn?ID=H260&Richting=1&Datum=24052012&Tijd=2045 The other direction you can select using the dropdown menu behind "Naar", the links "Eerder" and "Later" allow you to browse trough the entire timetable of this tramline.

Please note that line 260 will not run during the summer period (starting 8th of July) due to construction works.

Thx for the informations, the situation seems to be clear for me so that I should be prepared quite well for meeting "our" E6

What I'm searching for now are interesting places along main lines with much traffic for example. Ok, Dordrecht Zuid was suggested by you, but what about the situation in the north (Zwolle, Groningen).

Where are the emu's from Stadler and those ugly ones called "Protos" used to work? Questions about questions, I know))

A good plan for help: http://www.ns.nl/cgi-bin/spoorkaart/spoorkaart
The protos of carrier ConneXXion is between Amersfoort - Barneveld - Ede-Wageningen.
In the north (Groningen,,Zwolle) 'only' ICMm of carrier NS and GTW of carrier Arriva...

Stadler EMU's are in service on only 2 lines: Kerkrade-Heerlen-Maatricht (white vehicles, operated by Veolia) and Dordrecht-Geldermalsen (red vehicles, operated by Arriva).

If you want to take nice pictures of the Protos, you can travel to Barneveld Noord. Then leave the station and walk in the direction of Barneveld next to the railwaytrack. Take the first (and only) railwaycrossing on your right. You can stand there and take pictures with the crossing and signallamp or you can walk a little further and there you will see the Protos in the curve. Or do both! %08%

You can also travel to Rotterdam Zuidplein and take bus 69 to the waalhaven. Take a look at googlemaps to find you way. If you are up for a walk, then walk to Pernis. You will walk next to the havenspoorlijn/Betuweroute.

Another nice place is with a long walk is on the eastend of Zevenaar. You can take pictures of the trains between Arnhem and Doetinchem, the ICE and the Cargotrain from the Betuweroute.

You can also go to the Achterhoek. Here you can find DM'90 and LINT. You can travel form Arnhem to Winterswijk and further to Zutphen. This will the last year that this airia is operated by Syntus.

Sounds interesting after expecting much traffic there. But, am I right that around the station (side where trains coming from / going to Germany) noise protection walls are placed? Somehow I can't specify it exactly on suncalc.net...

From Zevenaar there are indeed noiseprotectionwalls in direction Emmerich for several kilometers. But on the Arnhem-side from Zevenaar station are plenty photospots, there are no soundprotectionwalls on that side, nor in direction Winterswijk.

Regarding the Betuweroute, better photo opertunity`s nearby the stations Opheusden, Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Sliedrecht.
Check Google Maps.

Don't expect the frequency to be like the right bank of the Rhine or the Nord-Sudstrecke. Far from that.

Hmmmm, somehow I thought that the line via Emmerich - Zevenaar seems to be used quite often by freight trains but a couple of them/h would we also fine

On some pictures (I forgot their URL) I saw places with the typical catenary as we know it from France like this: http://www.bahnbilder.de/bilder/oberbau-und-oberleitung-93539.jpg Do they still exist and if yes, where can they be seen?

At last: Which places would you recommend for taking pics of Fyra and Thalys trains?

That catenary can be found at Utrecht Overvecht-Hilversum.

For Fyra you can go to Breda. Locochanges every half an hour! That station is also to be complete renewed in the coming years. Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Muiderpoort (empty to and from Watergraafsmeer) are also options.

For Thalys you could try Rotterdam Centraal.

At the line of Hilversum - Utrecht Overvecht, you can find I think what you were looking for: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wandelaar030/6973345067/

For Fyra and Thalys, there are many great spots, but I quite like the station of Amsterdam Sloterdijk, which is great to make pictures at both sides, for example http://www.flickr.com/photos/denniskoster/3105349606/ from the Central-side, or http://www.flickr.com/photos/berthollander/6694069593/, or under the blue roof as in http://www.flickr.com/photos/48217992@N02/6055855638/

Yes indeed, that's the style I'm looking for Are there any more places that might be interesting?

A couple of years ago I've visited the french railway museum at Mulhouse, awesome! Your muesum in Utrecht should be similar to this place where historical vehicles could be seen!?

Does anyone know a source where services of historic trainsets are announced? I guess during the weekend some old locos etc. should operate like here in Austria.

The 'Spoorwegmuseum' in Utrecht is a museum with historical Dutch trains. Ranging from steam to electric.

The museum overall is well maintained. Not all trains are in a drivable condition, but at least their paintjob is well.

It is not common for historic trains to operate on the net along with regular trains on a sheduled basis. Only the 'Heimwee express' performs this. Every second weekend of the month, the 'Spoorwegmuseum' takes one of its drivable historic trains and drives it on the main railway network. It is a 40 minute ride to Maarn, departing at the 'Spoorwegmuseum'.

Coming dates are: 7&8 July (Mat '46), 11&12 August (Plan U). More info here: http://www.spoorwegmuseum.nl/het_museum/heimwee_express.html

Other historic trains (steam) operate on their own museum network. An example of such a organization is VSM. It operates steam loco's from Apeldoorn to Dieren. See for more info: http://www.stoomtrein.org/

Well, what do you think about interesting places along the HSL Zuid line? Especially suburban places for example...

What are the latest news about the V250's, did they already get a permission for regular services in the meanwhile?

My personal opinion about the HSL line and taking photographs with a nice surrounding is only to be found near Rotterdam and Zoetermeer, mostly it is reachable with public transport.
(dont ask me how and what about public transport because i only go by car)
Latest news about V250 is that they are getting there certificate off approval so they can drive on the dutch railways.
Only thing is that outside an occaisional test train and trains for learning the enginedrivers how to work with this stuff, you will not find one in normal service for (i think at least 6 more months)so hope of seeing those is not too huge.

I'm pretty sure you will see a V250 in a few hours when you're at te HSL between Schiphol and Rotterdam
